Review: Bitsy Bat, Snow Star by Kaz Windness

Bitsy Bat is excited when she sees snow for the first time. She goes to school prepared to have fun while keeping warm. And at first she does. She makes snow angels, tries sledding, and works on a snowman. But every time she tries a new activity, it’s not quite as fun as she expects. And she gets cold and wet.

She heads inside to warm up where she finds other kids enjoying reading and being warm and cozy. She figures out that everybody has different ways of enjoying a snow day, and that each way is okay. When all the kids are back in the classroom together, she gets an idea for them all to make paper snowflakes with their favorite snow activity written on them.

Bitsy Bat, Snow Star by Kaz Windness is another addition to the series of Bitsy Bat books. Each book is great at helping kids process overwhelming feelings and learn how to express what they need. Each story in the series is told from and autistic perspective, yet the appeal of reading them extends to everyone, not solely neurodivergent children.

Bitsy Bat, School Star deals with the stresses of starting school for the first time and making new friends. Bitsy Bat, Team Star addresses individual strengths and how they work with team efforts and friendship.

Each book also has an educational section at the back with information about autism. And in a note at the end, the author defines herself as autistic and explains that each book she writes explores a different aspect of autism. I recommend the whole series as a way into discussions of life challenges that many children will face.

The publisher provided me with a copy of this book for review.
