When Hugo realizes it’s his Mami’s birthday, he decides to get her something special. He knows she likes all kinds of rocks, so he sets off on an adventure with his pet dino. The two embark on an outer space adventure that still has them home in time to celebrate.
I Am A Space Tiger by Jarod Rosello is a fast-paced, funny tale of a child on an adventure. Hugo and Dino take off in a rocket ship that crash lands on an alien planet when a space tiger startles them. Turns out, Space Tiger needs help finding the special rock that fuels its planet.
Hugo transforms himself into a different space tiger and starts looking for clues on where to find the rock. He announces that once three clues are found and he uses his brainpower, he will solve the mystery. It’s a delightfully quirky story full of random details that keep the adventure moving. In the end, Hugo finds the perfect rock to take back to Mami.
A separate story finds Hugo having trouble getting to sleep. A visit from Space Tiger surprises him. The two try all kinds of ways to help Hugo get some shuteye, but they mostly end up making thing worse. It’s a cute follow-up to the first story.
The illustrations are fun and colorful and are likely to keep young readers turning pages. A note on the copyright page says the author started the book with pencil sketches in a small sketchbook. He then drew, painted, and hand lettered the story on an iPad. Impressive!
