Start a Book Club During National Family Literacy Month, Win a Copy of Book by Book to Help You Start

Today is National Family Literacy day, the start of a whole month devoted to families reading together. To celebrate, I’ll be giving away one copy each week of my guidebook, Book by Book: The Complete Guide to Creating Mother-Daughter Book Clubs. While Book by Book is geared to book clubs made up of moms and daughters, the tips you find there can be adapted to most any kind of reading group you want to start. That includes father-son and parent-child as well as kids only and adults only.

What’s so important about family literacy? For one thing, being able to read and understand well are crucial skills that help both kids and adults be successful at both school and work. And reading for fun is especially important, as a study by Scholastic, Inc. found that children who read for fun are more likely to think of themselves as good students and be successful at school. Book clubs are a way to keep reading fun.

Throughout November, I’ll be sharing tips on ways you can get your family reading together and talking about what you read. Along with the book lists I publish with suggestions by age group, you can use these tips as inspiration to start your own mother-daughter book club, family reading group or something else that promotes reading. For more in depth advice on getting a group off the ground, you’ll want your own copy of Book by Book. So don’t forget to leave a comment on this post talking about anything related to literacy. You could list some of your favorite books or say why reading is important to you. If you’re already in a book club you may want to say what you like about your group. Each Friday, I will choose a winner from the comments posted. If you don’t win the first week, your comment will be considered among the list of entries for the next three weeks.

  1. Fantastic!

I feel like I fell down on the job, not thinking to start a mother-daughter book club until my own middle-grade novel came out, but somehow, I just never thought of it! Now it’s time to step up and form a book club of our own. Not to read my book, but to find new ones and friends who share our interest in reading and discussing great books. Thanks for the push!

This is amazing. I was looking up books to read myself and found one I thought would be fun to read with my daughter when she’s older, so I made a note of it for a future mother/daughter book read. Then I decided maybe we didn’t have to wait to make a mother/daughter book club, so I looked and there are lists for 8 year olds for mother/daughter book clubs. Now I can’t get to sleep because my mind is buzzing with this idea, and I’m planning ways we could make a club at our school. I’ll talk to the principal tomorrow. I’ve never even heard of “Book by Book”, I just typed in “how to make a mother daughter book club” and I get your website! It’s fate! I’ll have to go to the library tomorrow and check it out! How fun!

My daughter and I just spent the summer reading “The Doll People” series together. I was delighted to find myself enjoying the stories just as much as she was. We are thinking of starting a mother-daughter book club to share the fun with friends -thanks for all the helpful advice on your site!

As an avid book reader, I have become increasingly concerned with my daughter’s dwindling interest in reading. She says she doesn’t need to read because “daddy doesn’t read either”. She’s not wrong. So last night I came up with idea of doing daddy/daughter and mother/son book clubs. Having 4 children, we struggle to find a way to connect and spend time with each of them, and I think this will be perfect! One month, my husband and oldest daughter will read the same book (and my oldest son and I will), then the next month we’ll switch. At the end of the month, we’ll go on book dates with our reading partner and do something related to the book. As soon as the two littles are old enough, they’ll join in too!
I found your website while looking for book reviews for different aged children. Thanks for publishing all your lists and reviews, they’re perfect! And I would love to win a copy of your book!

I was planning a play date for my young daughter and had decided to choose a book and then prepare a related craft project and snacks to round out the afternoon. My Googling led me here and now I’m working on invites for a mother/daughter book club for three year olds! Thank you for the idea!

(oops! Perhaps my comment was to be on this page.) I really want to start on group with my 8 1/2 yr old daughter, but not sure how to set up, etc. Would love a copy of this resource!

I love your idea about switching off with the kids on reading the books then discussing them together. It seems like a great way to spend focused time with each of your children, but still have time to get together as a family. Also, I want to let you know that you are the third winner in the November Family Literacy Month giveaway here are Mother Daughter Book Club. com. Congratulations and good luck with your club!

We have our 4th grade mom/daughter book club almost ready to go, and having resources from those who’ve already done it helps give that extra push to go ahead and do it! THanks for being a good resource, I’m sure that we’ll be relying on you.
